Let's visit together the "parapet walk" of Palazzo Vecchio and Arnolfo's Tower
The tower of Palazzo Vecchio raises to a height of 95 metres together with the crenellated parapet walk: it represents the completion of the first part of Palazzo Vecchio built by Arnolfo di Cambio from 1299, the place where priors gathered was called "Dado Arnolfiano" for its particular shape. A real castle protected the representatives of Florentine Republic! The holes from which guards threw boiling oil to the enemies are still visible along the parapet walk.
We will enter inside the cell that in 1433 housed at first Cosimo the Elder before his exile to Padova and Venezia and after a few years (1498) the dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola who was burnt at the stake in Piazza Signoria. The stone staircase leads to the top floor of the crenellated watchtower which offers a spectacular view of the city: the religious centre with the Cathedral of S Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery and Giotto belltower, Orsanmichele, The Uffizi, S. Miniato, Santa Croce are all visible from the top! The tower is topped by a copy of the old weather vane with the Marzocco, the lion symbol of Florence. An unforgettable landscape!
